Label Text“Not since Goya,” said the great photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, “has anyone portrayed war like Philip Jones Griffiths.” He concentrated on the effects of war upon civilians. “I wanted to show,” he commented, “that the Vietnamese were people the Americans should be emulating rather than destroying.” A complex tragedy is apparent in the face of this woman holding a newspaper with the image of her husband’s execution. The creator of that famous photograph, Eddie Adams, sent her flowers and a card that read, “I’m sorry. There are tears in my eyes.”
