Label TextThis enlargement of one frame from a surveillance film was taken in the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco on April 15, 1974. The robber was identified as the newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst. Weeks before she had been kidnapped from her college apartment in Berkeley by the Symbionese Liberation Army, a self-styled urban militant group. Hearst later alleged that she had been held in close confinement, sexually assaulted and brainwashed, but her apparently willing participation in the group’s crimes caused scandalous international news.
