Label TextIn 1963 the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) wanted to draw attention to racial injustice in Birmingham, Alabama. They staged sit-ins and marches intentionally provoking mass arrests and national media coverage. Soon, all of the adult SCLC volunteers were arrested, so the group trained students in non-violent resistance. The police chief Eugene “Bull” Connor ordered that high-pressure fire hoses and police dogs be used to control their protests. Moore’s photographs of these events caused international outcry.ProvenanceDavid DavisOn View
