Label TextAmid the destruction of chemical defoliation, a solitary infantryman cautiously approaches a bunker. His isolation accentuates the continuous peril of warfare. While denying enemy guerillas their cover, the denuded landscape also exposed soldiers to sniper fire. “A lot of the pictures,” Kennerly commented, “really depicted the courage and valor of the American soldiers who were fighting the war. That is really important for back then and for future generations.” Kennerly published this photograph in a diverse portfolio that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972.
