Label TextA jeweler and engraver in Liège, Theodor de Bry’s family was Lutheran. To escape religious persecution he took them to Antwerp, Strasbourg, then finally settled at Frankfurt in 1588. His two sons, Jan Theodor II and Jan Israël de Bry worked in the family printshop issuing popular etchings and engravings. This design was adapted from an engraving by Jacques de Gheyn after Goltzius. It is from a set representing the natural elements as servants of a great noble. Other plates represent a falconer who harvests the air, and a fisherman the sea; all three deliver their produce to the cook, master of fire.
