Label TextFormally trained in both painting and computer graphics design, Carrie Moyer is deeply engaged with painting’s potential for melding beauty and message as well as exploring the roles of illusion and content in abstraction. In Rapa Nui Smashup (“Rapa Nui” is the Polynesian designation for Easter Island), Moyer achieves a fusion of graphic clarity and abstract mystery, expertly integrating areas of bare canvas, poured pigment, defined contours, illusionistic shadows, and incidents of glitter. Her process subverts our expectations of how the painting was made and whether gestures were premeditated or intuitive.ProvenanceGifted by the artist to the Museum, 2014
