DescriptionOf black-lacquered wood, with red-painted highlights at edges. Rectangular cube with slightly convex sides. Hinged cover with hasp, fitting flush with sides. Top & side faces with gold-painted 'mon' of character resembling squarish, reversed "S" within a circle, perhaps the 'hiki' ("bars") of Tsuji clan. Two opposing sides each have pair of flat iron reinforcing strips & hinged carrying loop of rounded form.
ProvenanceGift to the Museum by Mrs. Sumner Pingree (Boston, MA) from the Weld estate on March 27, 1943. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
