DescriptionThis is the mate to the left, and is near identical in form and construction. The mainlame narrows to a truncated point at the front, and is without the etched cartouche. The cutout produced is straight and hollow-flanged, with guilloche etching. The straight edge is fitted with a short stud between a pair of turning pins for the attachment of an extension-plate (now lost) which converts the defense into the form for foot service. The anterior leather on the mainplate is lost and the lames riveted together at this point. There are sixteen rivets in the recessed band as opposed to the nineteen of the left defense.ProvenanceEarls of Pembroke and Montgomery (Wilton House, Wiltshire, England) to 14 June 1923 Joseph Duveen, their no. 28637.
