Label TextMillet is best remembered for his late paintings of heroic peasants pursuing simple but vigorous lives. At an earlier stage of his career, however, he was extremely poor and had to support himself by producing a series of small paintings of nudes, and occasionally even by sign-painting. This tiny picture is one of many he executed in the 1840s. Although it lacks the monumentality and moralistic content of his later works, it does reveal Millet's fine draftsmanship and strong brushwork.ProvenanceTheodore T. Ellis, Worcester MA
