DescriptionProbably Lucerne hammer modified at later date. Steel head, heavily ground down revealing the grain. Long quadrangular percussion head drawn out into 4 sharp points. Opposed by strong pointed 4-sided section peen with rectangular section base. Sides of head body drawn out in long, 4-sided acute spikes. Similar spike arises vertically in line with modern wooden haft. Head extends down haft in integral pair of short langets each secured by nail, one of which retains brass cap. 4-sided haft where it joins head, becoming octagonal to straight base.
Label TextThis weapon was designed to be used on horseback against armored opponents. The cleated hammerhead was ideal for gaining a purchase on the glancing surfaces of well designed armor.ProvenancePurchased by Museum from Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc.
