DescriptionLong shaft of soft wood, probably pine. Of circular section, tapers for about 2/3 of its length to tip. Tapered portion is deeply cut with 8 semi-circular, longitudinal flutes that extend nearly to tip which terminates in flat-ended button. Butt portion of shaft is nearly straight-sided, tapering only for about 1/4 of its length to straight-cut end. Near mid-length this portion is fitted with grapper made from strips of thick leather wrapped around shaft, to which it is secured with 3 flat-headed nails. There is no grip. Except for flutes which are yellow-painted, lance is painted black.ProvenanceSaid to have been used at the Eglinton tournament, 1839; Fenton and Sons, Ltd (London). Purchased by John W. Higgins on 27 April 1930 from Fenton & Sons, Ltd. (London). Given to the Armory on 1 July 1954. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
