DescriptionIron or steel. Long, solid haft of octagonal section on lower half, ending in rounded butt with "C"-shaped suspension ring. Haft is cylindrical above, terminating in large, heavy head of slightly flattened spherical shape. with turned ferrule below & carved, conical fitting above with short quadrangular spike. Sides of head are fitted with 7 faceted low hexagonal bossets; there is extensive copper brazing on the head.
Label TextThis mace is too heavy for fighting: it would have been carried in procession on ceremonial occasions celebrated by Shi'ite Muslims.ProvenancePurchased by Museum at Macomber sale , lot #306 at the American Art Association, Anderson Galleries (NYC) during December 10-12, 1936. Paid $17.50 for lot. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2104.
