DescriptionDark, russet iron. Deep, thick plate, concave to face, & rounded at edge. Proper orientation would appear to be as defense for lower face. This means top edge is formed as a right-angled, bracket-cut flange. Old patch repair near both ends, perhaps where once riveted to fall or peak. Immediately below flange is pair of crudely cut sights, with outwardly flanged edges. Below each is domed boss, pierced with 5 large holes in cross shape. Between sights vertical set of large holes of indeterminate purpose. Perimeter edge hollow-flanged. Face decorated with 7 pairs of deep, close-set lines which converge near bottom edge.
ProvenanceBashford Dean (Riverdale, NY), his estate's odd lot 55 purchased by Higgins on 9 January 1930. Given to the Museum on 1 July 1954. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
