DescriptionAfter a 16th century example in an Italian collection. The odd shape (extremely broad) and misalignments at the joints raise the question whether this is cobbled together from a pommel plate plus parts of a cantle plate. The end plates match each other, but are different in execution from mainplate. Interior of all plates seems to lack cracking, delamination, and other expected flaws.Label TextA knight's war saddle was often armored with a "pommel plate" in front and a "cantle plate" in back, decorated to match the rider's armor. The plates protected the knight's groin and thighs.ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on May 16, 1930 from Cyril Andrade, Ltd. of London, his no. 391. Given to the Museum on December 15, 1931. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
