DescriptionIdentical to WAM 2014.985.1 in form & construction, but for right foot. Russeted steel. Thin, "U"-shaped heel plate with large, slightly domed studs for strap (lost) & "D"-shaped tongued, hinged buckle on outside of foot. Riveted squared neck extends down at right angle. Fitted with pivoted bifurcated device, ends of which have perpendicular pyramidal & actutely pointed projections. Pivoted latch on neck permits 1 of 3 positions of the device - fully raised, for use as short, blunted spur; rotated halfway, to use the pyramidal projections as pricks; & fully rotated, with sharp spikes pressed into boot heel, acting as form of 'crampon'.
ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on November 24, 1928 from American Art Association (NY), lot no. 154 (Dean armor sale). Given to the Museum on July 1, 1954. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
