DescriptionHard, scaly steel, apparently originally rather hammer-rough, now worn somewhat bright. Of 8 upwardly overlapping lames, extending well over chest & deeply bossed over shoulder-blade, with sharp, low, full-length medial ridge & well-rounded at point of arm. Lames curve up towards arm as series of rather narrow laminations, deeping at mainlame & above. Work on 4 internal leathers & sliding-rivets at rear.

Defense extends completely over front of armpit with large triangular flange on mainlame at rear. Perimeter has inwardly turned, file-roped edges followed by brass-capped iron lining- & decorative rivets. Within mainlame is buckle-and-strap, presumably to attach to metal shoulder-straps in manner not unlike some 15th c. 'Stechzeuge'.

Topmost lame pierced with large hole, probably for securing post.

Defense made for use without plate arm defenses below, extending down over upper arm towards elbow, & terminates in deep, nearly cylindrical plate with downcurving edge. Double brass buckle & leather strap here (broken) encircles arm.
ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on September 28, 1929 from Estate of Dr. Bashford Dean (Riverdale, NY). Given to the Museum on December 26, 1946. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
