DescriptionSteel, in excavated condition. Blade appears to be variant of Oakeshott's types XVI or XVI(a). Moderately broad at hilt, with single shallow medium width fuller on each face, from above cross, to approximately half length. Both edges sharpened, with nearly parallel taper toward tip which is lacking. Lower half of blade is lozenge-sectioned, as type XVI. Tang is wide (1") & stout (4" to pommel). Large pommel (Oakeshott type I) is polyhedral, a faceted octagon on each face. Straight cross (Oakeshott style I) is rectangular-sectioned, tapering to squared tips. Area of "écusson" is broadened as an outward arch on each face.
ProvenancePurchased by JWH from Sumner Healey (NYC) 30 April 1929, as part of lot #238 (his 238-58). Price paid: $50.00. Given to the Armory 15 December 1931. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
