Label TextAs Japan entered the world in the late 1800s, traditional crafts became much sought after on global art markets. Takase Torakichi, also known as Kōzan, was a craftsman specializing in jizai figurines of insects and sea life, whose workshop made objects like this one for buyers both in Japan and overseas. The textured surfaces of this outstanding lobster rank it among the finest examples of the type.ProvenancePurchased by Museum on October 30, 1941 from Yamanaka & Co. (NYC).
