DescriptionMechanism housing fitted with loop to accommodate strap for crossbow. Fitting for lost crank; this turns a small gear that engages the teeth on the outside edge of the main wheel. This wheel is fitted with a small 3-lobed rack that engages the pinion. There is a pierced lug inside the mouth of the mechanims box, perhaps for a lanyard. The crank post is also pierced, perhaps to received a cotter pin.

The pinion has a single hook at each end, one larger than the other. The smaller hook is an alteration, and some cracking is present.

The staple, which would originally have secured the rope that tied the cranequin to the crossbow tiller, is slightly deformed, perhaps from some kind of forceful mounting.
ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins on September 28, 1929 from estate of Bashford Dean (Riverdale, NY), his no. 1. Given to the Museum on December 26, 1946. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
