DescriptionSabatons: Both are modern restorations, of six lames each plus toe caps. Of open heeled, “Gothic” –like form, they consist of a central lame over the instep, with three overlapping lames toward the ankle, and two lames underlapping to the pointed toe-cap, all secured with roughly formed, flattened iron rivets. The arched plate at the ankle is roughly inwardly turned.

The unit is secured by means of a butterfly-shaped buckle at the inner edge of the heel, and a restored strap transversely encircling the heel, and a similar set on the underside of the central lame (now missing).

The decoration consists of a transverse, incised line bordering the edge of all plates except that of the ankle. The central lame is carved over much of its face with longitudinal bordered bands of alternating divided dentate patterns and ascending intertwined, cusped and voluted scrollwork bordered above with an undulating pair of scrolls, the addorsed volute terminal linked by a short transverse band.

The toe-caps have a spatulated riveted patch at the join below, and are incised on the upper face with a triple-leaved divergent pattern emanating from scrollwork like that above.
