DescriptionGerman, ca. 1550, later etched to match. An embossed band across the upper chest, parallel to the neckline, indicates the former presence of a very different decorative scheme. The components might be cut down and reshaped from full-size versions. Of upper & lower plates, riveted at sides. Upper portion nearly flat in section, developing a pronounced medial ridge. This dips into near-peascod shaped lower half. Neck border deeply roped, outwardly turned, rolled inward. Flexible gussets, roped, proper right restored. Skirt of 2 lames, upper associated, bears patch at mid-point. Lower edge pierced with six holes for lining retaining rivets (missing). Lower lame restored.
Both breastplate and skirt have been etched later to match backplate.
ProvenanceFelix Joubert of London sold to Clarence H. Mackay in 1922. Purchased by John W. Higgins from Jacques Seligman & Co., NY (agents for Mackay) on 18 July 1939. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
