DescriptionOf the spaudler form, eight lames each. German (Augsburg) ca. 1500. Lames work on leathers at anterior and center, sliding rivets at posterior. The two uppermost lames overlap upwards, the five lower below central lame overlap downwards. Outer edges of top three lames are single indented borders, uppermost pierced and fitted with a pair of arming point rosettes; edges of borders are cusped; plates have medial ridge with "V"-shaped notch. Similar treatment plus two pairs of tin rosette eyelet inserts for arming points on central lame edges. Posterior edges of all lames secured with sliding rivets. Terminal lame rectangular in outline with curved edge lightly flanged inward, pierced for tin arming point rosettes; fitted with strap and original buckle. Surface has been heavily ground down. There is evidence of piecing together of steel in the lames.ProvenanceSir Guy F. Laking purchased in 1907 by Clarence Mackay collection (his #2, #A-38 in Gimbel sale); not in "Record of Armor Sales."
