Label TextThe Paris pharmacist Géraudel invented a popular “cough sweet.” He was an early patron of Chéret, commissioning him to produce several posters. Here, a finely garbed chérette inhabits a peculiar space with various laboratory-inspired equipment, including a curious red vessel echoing the shape of her torso and head. The woman’s long, sinuous black scarf mimics a backbone, stiffening her figure despite her tipsy stance. Meanwhile, an excessive—even intoxicating—amount of cough syrup topples into the space of the viewer.
