DescriptionExperimental arm defense. Of helmet (ballistic) steel, painted olive drab, lost on exterior; leather. Inspired by "Almayn rivett" style, and protects only the outer side of the point of the shoulder, the full length of the arm, and the back of the hand. Each consists of 5 pieces - top shoulder plate, roughly oval & bossed out over point of shoulder and upper extremity of arm; upper & lower gutter-like cannons, with curved openings at the bend of the elbow, with 1-piece shell-like cowter with heart-shaped sidewing; an irregularly trapezoidal wristplate, bossed out slightly for the metacarpal region of the hand. All elements riveted onto internal leathers, two at the elbow and one at the hand. Top of upper cannon has leathers pierced for adjustment to the plate above, each strap of which is pierced with three horizontal pairs of adjustable holes. Arm defense was secured by tab & laces at top (now lost), tied to a transverse pair of grommeted holes at the top of the shoulder-plate; transverse straps on the upper arm, the cowter and the handplate, all of which have or had snap closures; and a strap passing under the palm of the hand-plate. All edges have an applied, flattened border that is crimped at intervals. Only handplate is lined, having a thick piece of leather riveted to the interior. Previous accession # 2593.3.a & b
