Label TextA leading African American artist, Bearden worked a day job as a social worker for the City of New York in the 1930-60s. All the while he was drawing, painting, and working as a collagist, with connections to avant-garde artists’ circles of lower Manhattan. Friendships with writers, and a range of painters including George Grosz, Stuart Davis, and Joan Miró, prompted him to explore a spectrum of ideas from classical literature to improvisational jazz.ProvenanceMr. Ben Goldstein, New York, NY
