Label TextBoth Lace Samples depict a portion of a larger piece of machine-made lace. The prints were created by placing the textiles directly onto photosensitive paper, resulting in a type of photograph known as a photogram. These photograms record a direct, one-to-one copy of the lace. Visible wrinkles preserved in the sample on the left enhance the tactile immediacy the viewer feels in relation to the original lace material. Both sheets were once folded, probably making them more compact and portable. It is likely that the lace photograms originally served a utilitarian function, perhaps as pattern references.ProvenanceThe photograph was purchased by the Lee Gallery at the Paris photography fair Photo Verdeau from London dealer Bruno Tartarin in 2010.On View
