Label TextOf Gerard Manley Hopkins: Epithalamion celebrates—or laments—the joining of male and female in matrimony. An epithalamion is a song or poem written for a bride on her way to her nuptial chamber. Hopkins borrowed the term for a poem he wrote for his brother’s marriage, which disclosed his own inner turmoil. Attracted to men but also a priest, Hopkins rejected his sexuality in favor of the power of nature and the divine. O’Reilly’s affinity with Hopkins’ internal split is echoed throughout his works. On View
