Label TextBest known for his kinetic sculptures of decomposing organic materials like chocolate and bread, Roth meditated on the passage of time and his artistic process throughout his career. From Hand to Mouth (Pram) reflects his interests in artmaking, assemblage, and time. Roth consistently pushed the boundaries of various media and materials. In this case, he relied on photography to create a print within a print. Here, Roth created a telescoping image of two figures pushing a baby carriage across a field (sourced from a commercial postcard) and aligned the horizon lines, creating the sense of movement across the plain. Roth then photographed the echoing print alongside objects used as printing guides that are normally cropped out, such as the framing device, a grayscale, color bars, and black tape. These tools elevate the mechanics of his artistic process, drawing attention away from the postcard, which began as the subject of the work.
