Label TextBefore landscape prints came into vogue, illustrations in eighteenth-century travel books served to establish iconic symbols of Japan, such as Mount Fuji, seen here. According to the preface of this four-volume book, Minsetsu loved to travel and draw the “true view” (shinkei) of the actual places he visited. This was the earliest appearance in Japan of the landscape term “true view,” which describes the achievement of depicting the essence of a landscape rather than faithfully recording its appearance. Like many other landscape print artists, Hiroshige relied on such illustrated books produced by others for his subjects.On View
