Label TextThis unconventional photograph was achieved by means of a patient process devised by the artist to document the quality of light in his Vinalhaven, Maine studio. First, Beck took a photo of a blank piece of paper placed near a window, capturing the subtle variation in tones caused by sunlight and shadow. After printing the photograph, Beck placed it where the original blank paper had been positioned, rotated it 90 degrees, and then took a new photograph of the light as it interplayed with the original sun-dappled pattern. He repeated this process, stopping after four rotations “when a new abstract, three-dimensional space had been created.” Occasionally, as seen here, Beck adds spray paint before one or more rotations to amplify existing highlights. Just as light is the indispensable attribute of photography, Beck attempts to present light as the essential quality of a location.ProvenanceGrant Wahlquist Gallery, Portland, MEOn View
