Label TextThe Name written on this painting's box attributes it to Ukiyo Matahei (active early eighteenth century), a semi-legendary genre painter said to be the father of folkish Otsu-e. The coloring, particularly of the multiple layers of transparent fabric, is handled with great delicacy. The cherry blossoms painted in gold on the mosquito netting and the unstudied grace of the figures convey the type of elegance associated with the late seventeenth century. These elements, together with the lack of bravura in composition and the color and the sweet refinement of the courtesans and their patron suggest a Genroku (1688-1703) date for this painting.ProvenanceEstate of John Chandler Bancroft, Boston MA
