DescriptionA large and magnificent molded polychrome tile, underglaze-painted in hues of cobalt blue, turquoise, yellow, and manganese against a white slip ground and depicting an asymmetrical interior scene of a Safavid ruler and his guests, courtiers, and musicians within floral borders. Scene is taken from a mural at Chehel Sotoun Palace in Isfahan.
ProvenancePossibly commissioned from the artist by Alfred Lemaire [1842-1907]. About 1920, the operatic soprano Emma Calvé [1858-1942], Château de Cabrières, Aguessac, France; 1929, purchased (with château) by Victor Guibert; by descent to his son, who sold Château de Cabrières in 1962 and brought the tile to his new home. (December 13, 2022, Arts of the East & India sale, Millon auction, Paris, No. 460). (June 2023, Simon Ray, London); 2024, purchased by the Worcester Art Museum.
