Label TextOver the course of his prolific career, Edward Steichen experimented with various photographic processes. This portrait of Steichen's friend Jean Simpson recently underwent X-ray florescence, confirming the photograph as palladium over cyanotype. The photograph was made not long after Steichen was appointed Chief Photographer of Condé Nast Publications. Jean Simpson draws on both his fashion photography practice and his art historical interests. The photograph depicts an elegant modern woman in a flattering, commanding light. Simpson's stark profile, gold headband, and thick necklace recall the painted portraits of the Renaissance.ProvenanceLee Gallery, Boston, MAOn View
