Label TextA California native, Bechtle studied graphic design before shifting to painting and printmaking in the early 1960s. Here, he offers an unadulterated example of middle-class, suburban California. Reflective of his tightly-controlled Realism, this informal portrait of Bechtle and his family emerged from a series of frank depictions of families, cars, and the neighborhood surrounding his studio. This print is closely related to a painting from the same year, ’61 Pontiac, in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The source for both works was a snapshot taken before the family traded in their car.ProvenanceWilliam W. Struve, East Haddam, ConnecticutOn View
