Label TextMarguerite Zorach, who spent a formative period in Paris from 1908–1911, was seminal in bringing
vanguard European art movements such as cubism
and fauvism to the United States. In this work, she
tackled the traditional academic nude—a subject
often forbidden to earlier generations of female
artists—rendering the figure’s body with stylized
planes and exaerated curves that echo the
contours of the armchair. The chair’s upholstery
and the quilt wrapped around the model’s feet
allude to Zorach’s skills as a textile artist. In
addition to paintings, she created textile designs,
embroideries, hooked rugs, and batik—a sign of the
modernist impulse to break down traditional
hierarchies between fine art and craft.ProvenanceThe artist's son, Tessim Zorach [1915-1995]; (Kraushaar Galleries, New York, NY); 1977, purchased by the Worcester Art Museum.
