The refined palette of silver and gray heightened by maroon upholstery adds elegance to the subject.Label TextIn 1810, Stephen Salisbury encouraged his wife to sit for the renowned portrait painter, Gilbert Stuart, while he was in Boston. Stuart’s legendary charm was known to put his clients at ease and enabled him to capture both character and likeness. Stuart often worked in a slow, deliberate manner, much to the chagrin of his patrons. Such was the case here: the Salisburys waited impatiently over a year for receipt of this portrait. Elegant and fashionable, the forty-two-year-old Elizabeth drapes a diaphanous lace veil over her left shoulder, projecting an attitude of confidence and intelligence.
