DescriptionBaked clay.Label TextPottery styles dramatically shifted during the Yayoi period from the existing Jomon period earthenware pottery formed from stiff, sedimentary clay to vessels crafted from fine-grained clay. Yayoi pottery, made by firing in an open fire, is smooth, reddish orange in color, thinly potted, symmetrical, and sparsely decorated except for the colors created by natural firing effects. This piece was coil-built and paddled to strengthen the surface, and the firing turned the buff-colored earthenware black in certain areas.ProvenanceAnonymous gift.
