Label TextAbbott was a serious photographer when she went to Paris in 1921. Two years later she became Man Ray’s darkroom assistant, and he introduced her to Atget (1857-1927), the pioneer photographer. Atget began his career in 1888, specializing in Paris city views. He portrayed the nineteenth-century city as it was transformed by industrialization and migration from the country. When Atget died, Abbott acquired his prints and negatives. Over decades she faithfully printed his poetic documentary photographs, and promoted his achievement. ProvenancePurchase from Berenice Abbott, R. D. 1, Abbot Village, Maine 04406, February 27, 1970.
