Label TextWhen Andre was in high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Frank Stella was a classmate. The two artists shared a New York studio in the late 1950s. In his work, Andre tried to eliminate all decorative or extraneous details, preferring austerity to accessibility. He used commercial materials like cement or wood blocks for his sculptures. Here, the simplest numerical stamp evokes concepts of human counting, ordering, and record keeping.ProvenanceParasol Press, Ltd. New York
