During the Victorian era wealthy travelers made stops in Rome as part of their Grand Tour. To provide these travelers with mementos of their stay, photographers flocked to the area to create tourist images. MacPherson was a Scottish physician who set himself up as an art dealer and photographer in Rome in the 1850s and 1860s. He soon became the leading photographer of architecture and scenic views in Rome. MacPherson's images appealed to tourists, because they were not only a record of one's trip, but were infused with a romanticism about the subject.
