Label TextWilson began his career as a portrait painter in London, but left for Italy in 1750. Returning to England about 1756, he concentrated on classical landscapes in the tradition of Claude Lorraine. Wilson painted at least five versions of this scene, each with modifications and reassembly of elements. None is an accurate view of the lake, but all contain recognizable landmarks. No date can accurately be assigned, since Wilson changed his style frequently and often painted in different manners simultaneously. Such idyllic landscapes found a ready market among fashionable Londoners. ProvenanceBroughton Collection, Anglesey Abbey (according to receipted bill from Leggatt Brotehrs); sold at Christie's, December 3, 1926, no. 98 under "Various Properties", (according to W.G. Constable p. 194); and bought by Leggatt Brothers (Art Prices Current 1926-27, vol. VI, p. 61, no. 1304); Theodore T. Ellis since April 1927. Theodore T. Ellis, Worcester MA
