Hiroki Morinoue

American, Japanese descent, active in Hawaii, born 1947

BiographyBorn and active in Hawaii, Hiroki Morinoue studied both painting and printmaking at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and in Japan. Morinoue, who creates poetic works inspired by observations of the the rhythms, cycles and patterns of nature, pioneered a fusion of Western Impressionism and modern Japanese design. His abstract, serene paintings of calm water in aqua, black and blue, like this characteristic work, propelled Morinoue to fame.

Morinue lives in Holoalua, on the Big Island of Hawaii. He has worked as a teacher in the U.S. and has exhibited widely in the United States and in Japan. He has also completed several major public artworks in Hawaii. His later works also explore the media of ceramics, sculpture, photography and painting.
