Francesco Salviati

Italian, 1510–1563
BiographyFrancesco de' Rossi was called "Il Salviati" because Cardinal Giovanni Salviati was an early patron. Son of a velvet weaver, Francesco was at first apprenticed to a goldsmith then to painters. He was a leading member of the generation of Florentine painters after Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino; known for his elegant, complex High Mannerist style. (source: Getty ULAN)
