Label TextStevens left his native Brussels for Paris in 1844 and made his career in France. He won fame as a fashionable painter and was a popular figure at the court of Napoleon III. He specialized in studies of elegant society women, and he was one of the first painters to employ Japanese motifs in his compositions. This charming study of a young mother is a fine example of Stevens' work. He renders skillfully her rich surroundings and captures her sense of pampered contentment.
