Label Text“I think of paintings without subject matter as music without words,” said Kenneth Noland of his minimalist works from the 1960s. He chose this massive canvas because it provided him an ideal place to explore color. Using rhythmic blue, beige, yellow-orange, and red bands, he invites the eye to move down from one stripe to the next and then back up. Inspired by fellow artist, Helen Frankenthaler, Noland applied thinned paint directly onto unprimed canvas. This technique soaked and stained his canvases with color, leaving little trace of a brush, or in Noland’s words: “It’s all color and surface, that’s all.”
