Label TextFamed Paris music hall, The Folies-Bergère,opened in 1869, reaching the height of its popularity at the turn of the twentieth century. Initially opened as a theater and operetta house, the nightclub became better known for performances by scantily-clad cancan dancers. Also conspicuous were elegantly dressed prostitutes, commonly labeled promenoirs. According to an 1878 guidebook, Paris and Its Environs, “Women of the promenoir were required to demonstrate discretion; none were allowed into the [Folies-Bergère] without fortnightly renewable cards issued by the management.”
