Label TextLegrand is best known for his depictions of the dissolute Parisian nightlife—particularly brothels, bars, and louche music halls. Prostitution was legal in nineteenth-century France. Though it was subject to fierce regulation, ostensibly to prevent the spread of syphilis. By the 1890s social anxiety escalated to the point of near mania over the number of unregistered insoumise prostitutes in Paris. Throughout the eight-part series Les Bars, the artist cleverly provokes the viewer to determine whether these women are the safe, government registered, fille publiques, or potentially dangerous unregistered insoumises.
