Label TextHeavily influenced by the apocalyptic paintings of fifteenth-century Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder began a series of allegorical drawings in 1557 portraying the cardinal sins specified in Catholic dogma: Anger, Avarice, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Pride and Sloth. Later engraved by Pieter van der Heyden, the series cautions against hell-bound excess. This print represents peasants and bizarre creatures’ unbridled binging on food and liquor, a rejection of the moral teachings of the Catholic faith.ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. H.
