Matsushima (Pine islands), an archipelago of numerous pine-clad islets is one of the most celebrated and beautiful spots in Japan. Hiroshige has fit as many as possible into his design and has identified them for the viewer. The names read from lower left: Tsukiboshi, Nakome, Shirahama, Sarubayashi, Name, Tano, Komachi and to the rear, Kakota, Shirohama (again), Hanabushi and Cape Soma.--Swinton
