Label TextIn the 1930s Halsman became a leading fashion photographer in Paris. His sharp, closely cropped pictures looked fresh compared to the typical, soft-focus Pictorialist images of the day. Already popular in France, Halsman came to the United States to work for Life magazine during World War II.
Halsman began a collaboration with Dalí (1904–1989), the famed Surrealist whose exaggerated persona was itself a work of art. Dalí conceived of photographic images leaving Halsman to solve their technical challenges. A compendium of thirty-six of their portraits were collected in the book Dalí’s Mustache.
